summer loving'...

Monday, May 10, 2010 |
i love my friend summer! she is more koo-koo than i am (so it makes me look not so crazy), has 3 great kids (she has 4 kids, but on any given day one could be causing her problems) and is the other half of my coaching staff for baseball.
and may is her birthday month!
she doesnt require a whole month, but id give it to her. in fact, on her birthday, she was in a c.e.r.t. class to learn what to do when the 'big one' hits the salt lake valley. you would NEVER see me doing something so...useful...on my birthday!
this year, she got the idea to join the community garden.
so i got the idea to make her some markers for her garden! (and no-i came up with some of the ideas for this, but not the whole idea for this. see the flowering dogwood for the inspiration)
after going to 3 different thrift stores (yes, i love summer), i ended up at the dollar tree. it turns out that they have different styles of spoons. they were 2/$1 so i got 3 packs.
i only wanted the scoop part colored, so i masked off where i wanted it painted with just masking tape. it worked pretty well.
i used metal primer then spray painted it 'cool ocean breeze'. it took 2 coats on each side.
then i got to use my cricut again! i used brown cardstock and make my 'm's (for summers last name) 1".
i modge podged the m's on then clear coat spray painted the whole thing. i put a couple coats on since they would be outside. when i took the tape off, there was only 1 i had to use the nail polish removed on. then she can just get a sharpie and mark on the back what she is trying to kill grow!
i had found this little display bowl at savers for 99 cents. the other side says 'simplify' on it. (the stickers were still on this, it was originally $15!)
i used tissue paper from a pattern as regular tissue paper and the spoons fit nicely inside.

so happy birthday month summer! enjoy being able to know what died you are growing in your garden!

This is so cute! I have to admit, when I first saw them, I thought they were M&M cupcake toppers. :) But I adore the garden marker ideas everywhere. And these are super cute! I know she'll like them. Great job!
